The Klosterfrau Group Award
Since 2001, the International Klosterfrau Group Award for Research of Airway Diseases in Childhood has been awarded annually on the initiative of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Dietrich Reinhardt, the International Klosterfrau Group Award for Research of Airway Diseases in Childhood has been awarded annually. Valued at 30,000 euros, the prize honors scientists whose research has significantly contributed to the basic research, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood asthma.
Respiratory diseases are the most common illnesses in childhood and occur worldwide with high incidence. These conditions pose a significant burden on affected children and their families and present a variety of clinical and scientific challenges. Many of the underlying mechanisms and links between genetic and/or immunological processes, especially in early childhood and in the development of lung disease, remain unclear. The Klosterfrau Group Award aims to support researchers worldwide whose work improves the understanding and treatment of childhood respiratory diseases.
The chair of the jury, Prof. Dr. med. Gesine Hansen, explains: "The Klosterfrau Group Award seeks to advance scientific progress for children with lung diseases. Young researchers are encouraged to pursue research topics in this field with dedication. The award recognizes their achievements, honors their work, and motivates them." Motivation is a central goal of this prize.
In 2026, the Klosterfrau Group's international research awards will celebrate their 26th edition by recognizing scientific work that significantly contributes to the research, diagnosis, or treatment of childhood respiratory diseases.
